Shop local, Lexington! There’s a great new kid on the 800 block of East High Street in Chevy Chase. Nestled next to iconic Chevy Chase Hardware and across the street from the Morris Book Shop, High Street Fly focuses on local products and central Kentucky themes. Inside, you’ll find extremely soft t-shirts and sweatshirts featuring Ale-8, West Sixth Brewing, the classic Kentucky Wildcat, and Lexington, just to name a few. Shop Local Kentucky gear makes a big appearance, along with apparel featuring “1792,” the year that Kentucky became a state.
The atmosphere in High Street Fly is great — a little bit vintage, a little bit Kentucky, a lot bit cool. I’d expect nothing less, since this new spot is owned by Ann-Michael McCallister-Rawlings, the person behind Calypso, one of my favorite Lexington boutiques in the Woodland Triangle. High Street Fly includes a small nod to Calypso, featuring the same stylish vintage cowboy boots and a few tops, coats, and accessories to tie an outfit together. While Calypso centers around stylish attire for women, High Street Fly appeals to a wider audience with apparel for men, women, and even a few unique onesies for that stylish, local-shopping Kentucky toddler.
My personal favorite item in the store is a t-shirt celebrating Kenwick, a near-to-downtown neighborhood next to mine with adorable cottages and bungalows and Wilson’s, the best neighborhood grocery in town. When I talked with the sales associate working in High Street Fly today, I was excited to learn that the owner is working on a Chevy Chase neighborhood t-shirt right now. Other neighborhoods in the works? Perhaps. They’re keeping a running list of neighborhoods whose residents request that a t-shirt be made, and they may expand to more areas in the future. So, if you’re from Kenwick, stop by and buy, and support your neighborhood and a great local vendor. If you’re from somewhere else, stop by and check out their Lexington and Kentucky apparel, and be sure to tell the person at the desk that you’d like your neighborhood to be considered for the next round of custom t-shirts.
As I think back to when I moved to Lexington twelve years ago, I continue to be amazed by all of the new spots that have popped up around town since then. High Street Fly definitely belongs on that list.
